WHAT IS A THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM?
Teens and young adults attend therapeutic programs when they have been struggling to move forward in their lives due to a variety of issues. Alternative therapeutic programs exist as places of healing, growth and self-actualization. They are typically experiential and provide continual opportunities for participants to establish new patterns.
By attending these programs, we have learned to better accept, understand, and cope with the struggles that many young people face, including: depression, anxiety, mood variability, suffering from traumatic events, neurological diversity, academic difficulties, lack of motivation, or social discomfort. Reactions like avoidance, self-harm, withdrawal, substance abuse, and oppositional behaviors may be the catalysts for a teen or young adult to seek out help. The intended outcome of these programs is to help each person achieve balance, well-being, connection, and successful functioning in their lives.
Types of Alternative Therapeutic Programs
WILDERNESS THERAPY PROGRAMS in which young people spend six to twelve weeks in nature, with activities designed by therapists to help them develop self confidence, accountability, motivation, improved family relationships, and the ability to handle challenges.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMS both in nature and in more traditional residential settings.
RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAMS AND THERAPEUTIC SCHOOLS in which students live together in a therapeutic milieu and work or go to school as well as participating in clinical activities.
TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAMS which are organized to provide clinical support, life skills training, and experience gradually living, working and attending school independently.
